Protection of The Environment

Protection of the environment is an important aspect of the company’s activity and it requires strenuous efforts. It is understood as the integrated protection of the environment covering 600 ha of land, water and air, flora and fauna which should be carefully protected against any hazardous effect which might occur during operation of the power plant. We employ all possible methods to preserve the unique scenery, variety of biological species, clean and healthy environment.

The legal framework regulating protection of the environment related to the operations of the power plant mainly consists of the following national laws and international standards:  the Law on Environmental Protection, the Law on Water, the Law on Waste Treatment and the Rules on Waste Treatment approved by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, the Law on Monitoring of Environment,   LAND 32-99, LAND 10-96, HN 24 : 1998; HN 44 : 1993.

Employees of the power plant solve issues related to the environmental protection in their everyday activities. During the production processes we protect water, soil and atmosphere from potential pollution; abiding by the set procedures we collect, account the quantities of industrial and household waste and timely dispose it; sewerage water is treated;  chemical and combustible materials needed for production purposes are safely stored in the specially assigned and properly equipped storage facilities. Operating personnel of the power plant is supplied with gas analysers and inhibitors of chemical substances. Specially established civil safety groups are always ready to liquidate consequences of accidents or natural disasters.

Currently, the most important and the most acute issue in this field is protection of the Kaunas Lagon from potential pollution in the case of accidents or natural disasters as well as the quality control of the surface water (rain water) discharged into the Kaunas Lagoon.

Upon the implementation of all measures prescribed by the normative documents, in accordance with the inspection protocols on the implementation of the Law on Environment, the company performs better than it is required by the respective normative acts on the environmental protection, hence the present status of the company’s operations will allow to satisfy tightening requirements on the environmental protection in the future.
